All celebrities are famous, but not all famous people are celebrities.

The list of famous people in this world is endless, as nowadays you could class someone as being famous simply because they were trending on twitter for a day or made a ten-minute interview on the news. It’s fair to say that Andy Warhol’s prediction that “in the future everybody will be world-famous for fifteen minutes” has well and truly come true. However, this does not mean that everybody on this endless list is indeed a celebrity. As in the modern day the criteria for meeting both titles are rather different, but it is still possibly to meet both.

In order to be famous somebody needs to be known, but not just by a few people but on a large scale, there are many levels of fame. The lower levels of being famous are simply a short stint of fame such as making an appearance on television or posting a tweet that goes viral so that hundreds of thousands of people see it and interact with it. The higher levels of fame require an increased frequency of interactions with the world, for example a recurring highly watched YouTube channel or social media fame where it isn’t just the one post that goes viral but their entire profile, resulting in having a very large following. The next levels being much more world known, such as actors, musicians, Politian’s even. With the highest level being that if you were to mention their name to a random person, they would most likely know who they are.

The key difference between a celebrity and simply a famous person is meeting these criteria. A person can be famous by meeting just the one level and factor, whereas celebrities will match all the criteria for being the highest level of famous also with the social meeting following and influence, going hand in hand with their lifestyle. Their lifestyle being a major factor. Celebrities have much more of an influence on common peoples and fellow celebrities’ lives than just famous people do. They will impact how they dress, how they act, the music they listen to and how they want to look. But also, people are interested in their lives and want updates via social media platforms about what they’re doing and where they’re doing it etc.

Proofs of this is when you look at and compare incredibly known people and you can realise than some fall into the celebrity category and others the famous one. For example, Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio. Both world renowned actors at the top of their field, and it is most likely that if you were to go to most parts of the world people would know who they are. However, people are not interested in listening about Tom Hanks’ life, whom he’s dating, where he goes to eat and what he wears on a day to day basis. Yet people are for Leonardo, the tabloids go crazy every time he’s seen in public with a new girlfriend or out at a club wearing an unknown brand. This is because Leonardo DiCaprio is a celebrity, whereas Tom Hanks is just famous, incredibly famous, but just famous.

In conclusion the different criteria for being famous and meeting said criteria affects your level of fame, ranging from short lived fame to being known globally. This criterion is also in place for celebrities however their criteria goes beyond just that and goes past simply being famous. Resulting in being famous and being a celebrity two completely different things, even for similar people.
