Killers of the Flower Moon ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A Cinematic Masterpiece by Martin Scorsese.

Martin Scorsese, the best story teller of all time. I’ll raise my hands straight away and welcome the arrows by admitting that Scorsese is not my all time favourite director, but there’s no denying his unparalleled status in the world of cinema. His films transcend time and deliver stories that are not just wanted but needed.

Even when making a film closing cameo, filled with sincerity and elegance the man can do no wrong.

Many of his works have left an indelible mark, remarkably even on those who haven’t seen them. Considering I would only class “Killers of the Flower Moon” as my fifth/sixth favourite piece of his filmography yet still label it a true work of art, and a testament to Scorsese’s genius tells you everything you need to know about the man himself. This speaks volumes about his exceptional catalog, and I can only hope he continues creating cinematic giants for as long as he’s with us.

The Osage people, a Native American tribe, have a rich history marked by resilience and tragedy. In the early 20th century, they were forced to move to a reservation in Oklahoma due to westward expansion. What makes their story particularly significant is the Osage Reign of Terror, a series of murders targeting wealthy Osage who had oil rights on their land, making them some of the wealthiest people in the world at the time.

Martin Scorsese’s decision to tell their story through film is important as it brings attention to this dark chapter in American history. His storytelling prowess can shed light on the Osage people’s experiences, the exploitation they endured, and the quest for justice. It serves as a reminder of the need to acknowledge and learn from past injustices.

Leonardo DiCaprio’s performance is arguably the best of his career, as he seamlessly embodies the role of a persuadable fool, making us forget the genius behind the character. His portrayal of desperation, sadness, and misery feels genuine and infectiously emotional. His cries of despair in the cell evoke true empathy, and compassion.

Then, there’s Robert De Niro, an icon of the game. De Niro’s performance as a cunning, selfish man willing to spill blood for his gain is terrifying. The scene where he watches his farm burn left a lasting impression on me, sitting with me each night since I watched this film. The flames on his face showcased a man willing to sacrifice everything for personal betterment. For a man who he played gangsters, boxers, sociopaths, sharks and FBI agents this was by far his most intimidating performance and character.

Lily Gladstone, I owe you an apology I wasn’t familiar with your game. Her performance deserves special mention, now and for years. Her perfect portrayal of a pivotal character stole the spotlight in every scene she graced, leaving an indelible mark with a single scream that tore me apart. When she was on the screen, she was the screen, she was the story, the focus, the only thing that mattered. Her performance magnified the film tenfold, and I eagerly anticipate the lead roles she’ll be offered in the future.

The Acting in this film is nothing short of remarkable. I’ve waited a week since watching this film to write the review because the acting, and in particular who delivered the best acting, has toyed with me all week. At first I was confident that DiCaprio’s performance was the best, amazing me with every scene and almost making me pity him. Then I stood firm on Gladstone, having never watched her act before this portrayal shook me. A role filled with such pain, yet so much beauty has bewildered me. Finally we have De Niro, the man, the myth, the GOAT? Initially I stated that his delivery didn’t wow nor amaze me, after the impression his formidable presence has left on me, I’ll admit I was wrong. The scenes where De Niro’s character showed his true colours will stay with me for years. However, while all three actors are deserving of Oscar nominations, my money is on Lily Gladstone to walk away with one.

The supporting cast, including Brendan Fraser, Scott Shepherd, Jesse Plemons, and Tommy Schultz, all delivered performances that complemented the narrative seamlessly. Certain actors have the unique ability to elevate any project they’re a part of simply by being on screen, Plemons and Fraser are prime examples of this phenomenon. Their presence added an extra layer of excellence to the film.

The locations in “Killers of the Flower Moon” are breathtaking. This film offers one of the most visually stunning experiences I’ve had in recent years. The grandeur of the landscapes and the attention to detail in recreating historical settings immerse the audience in the world of the Osage Nation, making it an integral part of the storytelling.

The partnership between Martin Scorsese and Thelma Schoonmaker is stuff of legend and needs to be mentioned. Their collaboration continues to yield cinematic treasures, and this film is no exception. Schoonmaker’s editing prowess complements Scorsese’s direction, resulting in a cinematic synergy that has produced true art on tens of projects.

If there’s one criticism I have, it’s not so much a criticism as a minor qualm. The film’s pacing, while arguably necessary for a story of this type, makes the film feel like it’s runtime. I don’t mind for a second long films, I have no issue sitting in the cinema for hours on end if the films pace feels nicer and smoother. I say that this isn’t a real criticism as I actually stand by the duration with the three and a half hour length being completely justified, given the scope and depth of the narrative, but it genuinely felt like you were sat for a three and a half hour film. In contrast, other lengthy films like “Oppenheimer” managed to maintain a brisker pace. As said this isn’t a real criticism, just a word of warning to go into this film knowing you’ll be sat there for a while and it’ll feel like it.

In conclusion, “Killers of the Flower Moon” is the work of art I expected. It’s a testament to Martin Scorsese’s enduring genius and his ability to tell stories that resonate across generations. The exceptional performances of Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, and Lily Gladstone, coupled with the supporting cast’s contributions, breathe life into a haunting chapter of history. The film’s visual grandeur, courtesy of stunning locations, transports the audience to another era. Martin Scorsese and Thelma Schoonmaker’s collaboration continues to create masterpieces. While pacing may be a minor concern, it doesn’t detract from the overall brilliance of this cinematic gem. “Killers of the Flower Moon” is a must-see, an enthralling epic that lingers in the memory long after the credits roll.

There was no mention of the murders.
