“I can’t shoot kids… again”

Well, it turns out all you need to survive a zombie apocalypse is a Darth Vader costume, and some Taylor Swift songs. I’ll let you decide which you think is the more important of the two.

Despite this being a zombie film, Little Monsters managers to deliver a surprisingly lighthearted, and charming end product. Featuring all, gore, betrayal, comedy, romance and a good sing along aspect. Name me another horror film with all of those.

If you watched the trailer for this film before watching it, then you know exactly what to expect. As mentioned before, a lot of gore, a lot of comedic aspects, and some questionable zombie action. This is exactly why is delivered, if this is what you seek from a film of this kind then look no further. Although the zombie aspect of this feature isn’t added until the second act, they still manage to fit in plenty of bites.

Despite being made as a comedy, and for this purpose specifically, these scenes were still incredibly effective and well done, with almost entirely practical effects. The makeup and costume designs are spot on, and without a doubt one of the most impressive parts of this movie. Each and every zombie, and victim look disgusting, threatening, and somewhat real.

The story followed a teacher (Lupita Nyong’o), a down on his luck loser trying to pull her (Alexander England), and a troubled children’s entertainer with an at times strenuous relationship with his puppet co-star (Josh Gad). Each having the responsibility, of keeping a Kindergarten class safe, and entertained during an attack from flesh eaters. It’s a comedy gore fest that works on many levels, but misses the mark with others.

Lupita, was bestowed the role of leading lady. She carried this out with poise, confidence, and class. Her soft approach to this film, really helped to bring out and highlight the more testing characters and scenes. She was excellent, and deserving of the praise given.

Josh Gad is incredibly hit and miss with the film community, however in this picture he really steals the show. Gad portrays a self absorbed, sex addicted, children’s entertainer… with a strong hatred for children. Can’t write it eyy. Despite this testing role, Gad performed with nothing but passion, and humour. He really did lighten the spirit of the mood, even during the scenes of his anger is ways.

I thoroughly believe, that most people are going to really like, and enjoy this film. It is far from perfect, but it is definitely a cheerful piece of work. Little Monsters is a fast-paced, gore filled, darkly comedic and playfully hilarious film.

Even though, I most likely wouldn’t choose to watch this again. It is a good film, and I definitely enjoyed watching it. But I fear it may lose its comedic charm if I was to watch it again. Despite this, I definitely remember you watch it at least once.

3.5* 7/10
