Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1 (2023) film review
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
A Magnum Opus in Action Cinema
In a world where cinematic legends fade and franchises lose their charm, “Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1" emerges as a testament to the enduring excellence of both Tom Cruise and the Mission Impossible series. It’s my fervent opinion that this installment is the crowning jewel in the franchise, excelling in every conceivable aspect. With immaculate action sequences, breathtaking locations, and an impeccable cast, the film is a mesmerising journey through espionage and adrenaline-pumping thrills.
In an interview several years ago Anthony Mackie stated that there are no longer any ‘movie stars’ like there used to be, we just have movie characters. For instance when Stallone, Eastwood, and Schwarzenegger were in their primes, people would go see their new film, now people go see the new Iron Man film, or Batman, etc.
Tom Cruise doesn’t abide by this though. As a man whom I have tirelessly referred to numerous times as the last true movie star. He has proven that, like a fine wine, he only gets better with age. His dedication to his craft and willingness to put life and limb on the line for the sake of storytelling is beyond commendable.
For example, the cliff jump. I think it’s both hilarious and genius that they filmed the most dangerous stunt of the film as the very first thing with a mentality of ‘if he dies from it, it’s not like we’ve wasted our time’.
Cruise is the magnetic force that draws us to the cinema, ensuring we’re in for a cinematic experience like no other. With each installment, he redefines the limits of what’s physically possible in action sequences.
“Dead Reckoning Part 1" presents us with a riveting ensemble of characters, each representing a unique facet of the Mission Impossible universe. Hayley Atwell’s inclusion into the series is a brilliant move, as she seamlessly immerses herself in the world of espionage and delivers a performance that leaves an indelible mark. Rebecca Ferguson’s return as Ilsa Faust is nothing short of breathtaking. Her character continues to evolve, and her portrayal adds depth and intrigue to the story.
However, it’s Pom Klementieff’s portrayal that truly steals the show. Her performance is nothing short of a revelation, leaving audiences in awe. Klementieff’s on-screen presence is captivating, and she effortlessly commands every scene she’s in. Her character adds a layer of complexity to the story that elevates “Dead Reckoning Part 1" to an entirely new level.
Simon Pegg, often known for his comedic roles, reminds us once again that he is a phenomenal actor deserving of endless respect and appreciation. His character, Benji, continues to be a source of humor and relatability, but Pegg also injects a genuine emotional depth into the role that adds significant weight to the narrative.
The action scenes in “Dead Reckoning Part 1" are nothing short of perfect. Director Christopher McQuarrie’s masterful control of the camera and choreography creates sequences that are both thrilling and visually stunning. From the heart-pounding car chases to the mesmerising aerial acrobatics, the film offers a constant adrenaline rush that keeps audiences at the edge of their seats.
The locations featured in the movie are breathtaking and serve as an integral part of the story. From the bustling streets of Rome to the exotic beauty of the Maldives, each setting is meticulously chosen, enhancing the global scope of the film. The cinematography captures the essence of these locations, making them feel like living, breathing characters in the story.
What sets “Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1" apart is its ability to connect the audience to every character on the screen. The flawless acting and the brilliantly crafted plot ensure that we invest emotionally in the fates of these characters. It’s not just a series of action set pieces; it’s a story that compels us to care about the individuals involved.
The anticipation for Part 2 is palpable. It’s rare to find a franchise that consistently delivers quality with each new installment, and the Mission Impossible series has not only maintained its standard but continues to surpass it. The thought of another exhilarating chapter next year is enough to make any fan of the series giddy with excitement.
However, there’s a deeply troubling aspect to the story of “Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1.” Despite being an undisputed masterpiece in the realm of action cinema, the film faced a dismal fate at the box office. It angers me to see such a remarkable piece of filmmaking overlooked due to its release timing. Coming out at around the same time as the Barbemheimer team up, MI:DRP1 lost out on IMAX screens and marketing opportunities. It’s a harsh reminder that sometimes, a movie’s financial success is not a true indicator of its quality.
In conclusion, “Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1" is a cinematic triumph, showcasing the extraordinary talents of Tom Cruise, the brilliance of the Mission Impossible franchise, and the stellar performances of its cast. It’s a film that captivates, thrills, and takes us on an unforgettable journey through the world of espionage. As we eagerly await Part 2, it’s undeniable that the Mission Impossible series stands among the very best in the realm of film franchises, and it deserves all the recognition and accolades it can get. This is not just a movie; it’s an experience, and it deserves to be celebrated as one of the best films of the year, regardless of box office numbers.
