⭐️⭐️⭐️.5.

Denzel Washington’s undying brilliance in a slightly diminished franchise

Washington’s portrayal of Robert McCall, a retired vigilante with a strong sense of justice, remains as compelling as ever in this third instalment of The Equalizer franchise. He effortlessly slips into the character’s shoes, exuding charisma, wisdom, and a palpable sense of moral duty. His ability to convey a character’s depth and complexity through subtle nuances in his performance is unmatched.

The cinematic landscape has witnessed the rise and fall of many actors, but Denzel Washington, a legend in his own right, remains a shining beacon of excellence in the industry. In “The Equalizer 3,” he once again proves why he’s regarded as one of the greatest actors of all time, even if the film itself doesn’t quite reach the caliber of his prime. With a career spanning several decades, Washington’s prowess as an actor is as potent as ever.

In a recent review, I may have been guilty of labelling Tom Cruise as the last true movie star, but upon further reflection, whilst Denzel is still performing he stands alongside Cruise on the podium. Long before Cruise’s stardom soared, Washington was already gracing our screens and captivating our hearts. His enduring charisma and talent ensure that he remains a star, and as long as he continues to grace us with his performances, that stars light will never dim.

One of the fascinating aspects of the “Equalizer” franchise is that it remains the only set of sequels Denzel Washington has chosen to take part in. While I am sure he has been offered countless opportunities. This commitment to quality is admirable, and “The Equalizer” series consistently stands as a testament to his dedication to delivering engaging, action-packed narratives.

What sets “The Equalizer 3" apart from its predecessors is the change of scenery. The film transports us to a tranquil Italian town, a departure from the urban backdrops of the earlier installments. This shift in setting provides a refreshing and picturesque backdrop for the action sequences that have become a hallmark of the franchise. The contrast between the quaint Italian town and the extravagance of the action sequences is a masterstroke in storytelling, adding depth and heart to the narrative.

Director Antoine Fuqua deserves commendation for bringing together the disparate elements of “The Equalizer 3" into a brilliantly put together tale. The pacing is spot on, allowing the audience to savour the quiet moments in the would-be peaceful town and then jolting them with intense action sequences. The balance between character development and pulse-pounding action is a testament to the director’s skill.

The supporting cast, while not as prominent as Washington, delivers solid performances. Remo Girone and Andrea Scarduzio, the two standouts in my opinion. Both bring a charismatic and enigmatic presence to the screen, creating a captivating foil to Washington’s McCall. Their dynamic adds an extra layer of intrigue to the narrative.

The film doesn’t shy away from violence, and Washington’s ability to convey the emotional weight of these moments is a testament to his acting prowess.

The musical score by Marcelo Zarvos complements the film beautifully, enhancing each and every scenes impact when the moments arose. It seamlessly transitions between the serene Italian backdrop and the heart-pounding action, contributing to the film’s authenticity. Making it feel like real life.

The cinematography by Robert Richardson is stunning, capturing the beauty of the Italian countryside while still ensuring that the action is intense and immersive. The film’s use of light and shadow adds depth to the scenes, emphasising the duality of McCall’s character.

As I watched the film, I couldn’t help but imagine a future where Denzel Washington returns to a little Italian town for another project. However, this time, devoid of the relentless fighting, but rather focusing on the pure essence of a simple life. Almost a ‘What If’ of if this film gave Washington’s character the life he desired. The juxtaposition of such serene beauty with thrilling sequences underscores the film’s exceptional cinematography and direction.

With both making truly great films this year, one of my cinematic wishes is to see Denzel Washington and his son, John David Washington, collaborate on a film. Whether be in a father/son role or simply co-stars, either would make me a happy man. Both have displayed immense talent and versatility in their respective careers, but it’s regrettable that their paths seem to be diverging rather than converging. Possibly due to John David’s admirable desire to be his own man, not stuck in his father’s shadow. While I remain doubtful of such a collaboration in the near future, the idea of the two Washingtons sharing the screen is an enticing prospect and one I hope to see eventually.

In conclusion, “The Equalizer 3" may not reach the pinnacle of Denzel Washington’s illustrious career, but it reaffirms his status as one of the greatest actors of all time. The change of scenery in this instalment adds a new dimension to the franchise, and the balance between tranquility and action is expertly executed. Washington is, and will always be, a star in his own league, and his commitment to quality cinema is a gift to us all.
